There is currently a vaccine to try and prevent dogs from contracting Borrelia burgdorferi. There is not currently a vaccine available for cats.

It is most common in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, and upper Midwest, although the range has been increasing in North America. While ticks are often associated with warmer weather, they can be active year-round if the temperature is above 40°F.
